Whether you're a spinner or knitter, advanced or a novice, interested in charity knitting or our spin-in, we have something for you at WC! We're so excited to bring you our new series of classes and hope to see you soon at our upcoming events! Feel free to contact us to sign up for a class.

Flax Spinning Class
Learn how to dress and use a distaff, and make and use a lap distaff (if you don’t have a distaff), how to spin flax. Make a beautiful heirloom yarn perfect for weaving.
Requirements: Bring your own wheel. Be a competent spinner. Bring a distaff, if you have one. Bring an old bath towel for your lap, and a hand towel or two to dry your hands.

Thinking of starting an Etsy shop or selling online? Wondering how to be found in cyberspace? Jessie Booth, founder of Phat Fiber, is coming to WC Mercantile to share tips, tricks and marketing strategies with a focus on crafts, yarns and fibers. Lunch will be provided. SEATING IS LIMITED. FALL SPIN IN  *September 25th 2010*
Our fall Spin-In will be held on Saturday, September 25th at 1:00 pm. Bring your wheels, spindles and friends for an afternoon of fiberific fun!  Refreshments will be served.

BEGINNING SPINNING
This class is FUN!! It covers everything about drop spindles, the different fibers, how to control tension and twist on the spindle, and more!  A drop spindle and fiber is included in the cost for this class. Space is limited, reserve your spot today!!

INTRO TO THE WHEEL
This class is perfect for new wheel owners wishing hands-on guidance to start spinning on a wheel. The class covers the parts of the wheel, care and transport, the spinning wheel history and you will learn about tension, plying and finishing your yarn. This is a hands-on class.

Please bring your wheel (in working order) and at least three bobbins. Call ahead of time if you have any questions and to reserve your spot as space is limited. You can also reserve a shop wheel. 
Prerequisite: Beginning Spinning or the ability to draft on a drop spindle.
Dates and Times:  Saturday July 31st, 2010 1pm - 4pm 
                            Saturday September 18th, 2010 1pm - 4pm

One Class, $30 + $5 for materials.

YARN DYEING WORKSHOP
Ever want to dye your own yarn and create your own colorway? This is the perfect intro into the world of dyeing. A demonstration of several dyeing techniques using acid dyes on wool roving and yarn. As a part of this workshop, you will hand-paint your very own skein of sock yarn.
Dates and Times:  Saturday September 11th, 2010 1pm - 3pm
One Class, $30 includes all supplies.


MINI SOCK CLASS
This class is a great way to dive into sock knitting. Participants will knit a mini sock, cuff down, learning the components necessary for the construction of full sized socks. Please bring your own set of double point needles and a small crochet hook or purchase before class. Yarn will be provided. The finished mini sock will be a knitting gauge swatch or a reference for future sock knitting.
Prerequisite: Please know how to cast on, knit, purl, knit in the round on double point needles.
Dates and Times: Saturday July 24th, 2010 1pm - 4 pm

LEARN ENTRELAC: COLORFUL FELTED BOWL
Felted Entrelac Bowl - Learn the entrelac technique as you knit a multi-color bowl. Participants should be able to knit, purl and work with double-pointed needles. Experience with increasing and decreasing will make the knitting easier, but is not required. Wool yarn will be provided. Materials: Size 8 Double pointed needles (12 or 16 inch circular would work instead of DPNs), and some stitch markers.
Dates and Times: Saturday August 28th 10am - 2pm, feel free to bring a lunch.
One Class, $30 per person


KUMIHIMO - AN ANCIENT ART
Use fun and colorful yarns or cords to make these beautiful Japanese braids. Braids can be used as jewelry, purse handles, bookmarks and decoration for your knitted projects.
Materials Needed: Bring all your odd and end pieces of yarn to braid up!

BEGINNING KNITTING
Curious about knitting? This is the class for you! This introductory class will teach you to cast on, knit stitch, and cast off. Materials are provided.
Dates and Times: Saturday June 12th, 2010 1pm - 3pm
                           Saturday Sepember 11th, 10am - Noon
One Class, $20

ADVANCED KNITTING

It's time to go from basic knitting to knitting cables, bobbles, increasing and decreasing, and knitting in the round. We will give you the push you need. In this class you will learn Purl stitch, Slip stitch, KFB, M1, K2Tog, Yarn overs, Knitting in the Round, Picking up stitches, Changing color and finishing off. Please bring size 8 or 10 knitting needles, light color worsted weight yarn, circular needles, cable holder, crochet hook size G or H. Prerequisite: Please know how to cast on, knit and cast off.

CROCHET 101
This introductory class will teach you the chain stitch, slip stitch, single and double crochet. Please bring a "G" hook.

ADVANCED CROCHET
Learn more basic crochet stitches and techniques. This class will cover crocheting in the round, increasing, decreasing, half-double and triple stitches, edgings and even flowers. Bright G or H hook, and light colored worsted yarn.

INTRO INTO LACE
This is a beautiful lace scarf perfect for those folks that are new to lace. The class includes learning a yarn over stitch needed to create lace. Prerequisite: Please know how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off. 
Materials Needed: Worsted or sport weight yarn and size 6 or 7 knitting needles. Pattern included.

PLYING ON THE SPINNING WHEEL
You've mastered spinning singles! Now take the next step and learn to ply singles into yarn. This class will teach the importance of the Z and S twist, Navajo plying and other fun plying techniques.
Prerequisite: Ability to spin a continuous thread on your wheel.
Materials Needed: Spinning Wheel, 3 spools/balls of singles (not necessarily full bobbins), one empty bobbin, lazy kate, thread in contrasting color with container and Niddy Noddy.

SIT & KNIT
Show off finished projects, bring projects you're currently working on, and meet knitters in your community!  Bring a friend!
Dates and Times: Every Sunday afternoon from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

KNITTING FOR A CAUSE

Preemie Hats
Here's a chance for you to use up all of that left-over yarn and help a worthy cause!  Knit newborn or preemie hats that will be sent to local hospitals.  We can get you started in how these easy-to-make hats are constructed or pick up a free pattern and return your finished hats to the  drop-off box located in the store.

Caps for Soldiers
Patterns for knitters and crocheters are available free of charge.  Please note color restrictions due to military standards.  Colors must be black, dark gray or camouflage.  Show your commitment to our military by creating a wool hat for one (or more) of our troops!

For each donated hat you will receive a coupon for $1 off any knitting or spinning item!  (limit 5)
